2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.
Should these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
