An fifteen-year-old boy has been punished to life behind bars with a minimum duration of 16 years for the homicide of fellow schoolmate Harvey Willgoose during a lunch period.

Deadly School Event

Mohammed Umar Khan pierced the victim, who was also 15 years old, through the cardiac area with a large blade at the city's educational institution in February.

Mrs Justice Naomi Ellenbogen lifted the name suppression order on the perpetrator during the punishment phase at the judicial building.

Family Statement

The victim's mother expressed she felt "like a big load has been removed off my shoulders" following the judgment.

The pair of adolescents had previously disputed over online platforms in the time leading up to the deadly event.

Mrs Willgoose stated she was glad the lowest period had been determined above the statutory minimum of fifteen years.

"My father has been receiving medical treatment through the legal process and he just couldn't hold on any more," she said.

Context of the Attack

Before the homicide on 3 February, the defendant and the victim had taken different sides in a separate disagreement between two other pupils.

CCTV from the date of the knife attack showed the perpetrator approaching the deceased in the outdoor area shortly after midday.

Witnesses recounted a situation of "confusion", with people "fleeing, screaming throughout" during the violent encounter.

Legal Trial

In the legal proceedings, Khan stated he had not meant to kill Harvey or cause him serious harm, asserting he could not remember what had happened.

Prosecutors argued that he had "desired to demonstrate he was hard" and "understood exactly what he was doing".

"You served as the instigator and... you acted in pain and fury at what you considered to be his betrayal of your bond," declared the court official during the punishment phase.

Aftermath

The educational institution issued a statement stating that Harvey was "deeply missed every daytime by the whole educational community".

Law enforcement emphasized the catastrophic consequences of bearing blades, noting that a "instantaneous decision" can irreversibly alter multiple futures.
