Debunking Venezuela Victory Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

AI-generated pictures claiming to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his apprehension by the US have amassed tens of millions of impressions on social media.

How AI Images of the President Appeared Within Hours

The first inauthentic AI image apparently displaying him being escorted off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The graphic was not shared any authoritative American sources; it was instead published on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.

Further AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the ensuing hours, appearing to show more angles of the leader detained. Visible watermarks on these images show they came from an Instagram account named ultravfx.

The detection tool says these additional pictures were also produced using generative models.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued

Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following this real photo was made public, synthetic images persisted online but were updated to show the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches show the new fake images were first posted on the video platform by a digital art profile. Similarly, SynthID found the new graphics were generated or edited Google AI.

Important Facts:

  • Deepfakes gained traction after the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The first fake picture appeared on the same day on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID helped to confirm the pictures as synthetic.
  • Fabrications continued to spread and evolve despite the release of authentic photographs.
  • The source of many fabricated images was linked to specific online accounts focused on graphic design.
