Ex-president Trump has yet again announced he would urge FIFA to pull global soccer tournament events from a venue based on that city's governance, with the Boston region emerging as the third targeted location to receive such threats from the American leader. Additionally, Trump remarked he would evaluate comparable measures against Southern California for the 2028 Summer Games due to possible public safety risks.

Jurisdictional Limits and Informal Leverage

Although Trump holds no direct legal authority to unilaterally remove either event, he can lobby the organizing committees in charge of each competition to move venues.

Context of Remarks

The comments were made during a news conference with Argentina's leader Milei, who was present in the White House following the announcement of a massive financial assistance for the Argentine country. Near the close of the event, a reporter asked Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in Boston where police officers were targeted and a police vehicle was burned. The journalist also questioned if the situation could lead to the removal of organizing rights for the expanded World Cup.

“We could take them away,” the former president said about the soccer games, scheduled to be held at Gillette Stadium. “She is ineffective … she’s radical left, and they’re occupying parts of the city. That is a significant assertion, isn't it?”

Urban Disturbances and Public Safety Concerns

Unauthorized gatherings, a online-fueled occurrence where participants congregate on public avenues after dark to engage in dangerous driving, have emerged as a ongoing issue in American cities since the lockdown shutdowns. Latest incidents have turned violent in the state, including Boston. Nevertheless, these gatherings are typically not seen as linked to any specific political ideology.

“When someone is failing, and I believe exist dangerous circumstances, I would call Gianni [Infantino], who is phenomenal, and say it should be shifted to another location,” Trump said on Tuesday. “He will do that. He might not prefer the action, but he'd agree. Readily, he’d do it.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has been open his attempts to be publicly aligned with the former president ahead of the upcoming World Cup, set to be hosted in numerous American venues across the United States along with several in the northern neighbor and a few in the southern neighbor. The FIFA president has participated at multiple White House functions, facilitated Trump deliver the Club World Cup cup after that tournament’s final, and has even rescheduled his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a journey to the Arab region earlier in 2025.

This has not stopped, Trump from threatening the relocation of World Cup matches from additional American venues. It's the beauty of football, that it is transcends one leader and bigger than a nation.”

Olympics Threat

During the event, Trump’s reply to a query about the Massachusetts city veered into a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“If I thought LA was not prepared properly, I'd move it to a different city if I had to,” Trump stated. “On that one I’d probably have to secure a different kind of consent, but we will take that action.”

Official consent Trump refers to would must come from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their president, she, was chosen to her position in spring and has not yet hold a public appearance with him, but she indicated that she would like a meeting with Trump at some point.

Additional Criticism

The former president also condemned the state's leader Newsom’s response of this year’s LA wildfires, stating that a similar situation could cause the relocation of the Olympics.

“If Newsom doesn’t play ball, we’re gonna have to be strict,” he said.

His statement was just as unambiguous for Boston.

“The city should clean up their act,” Trump stated. “That’s all I will say.”
