{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident happened on the third lap when marshals were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"On lap three, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
