Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Following Emphatic Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel shared his regret that the England team did not get stronger support from the home crowd during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his side continue their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the match. Yet, he was displeased with the mood at the national stadium.
“With limited sessions to prepare against a organized team and we excelled,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We couldn’t score the additional ones. It was quiet. There was no support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the team deserved better encouragement today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a little more support in periods where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a dispute among fans, the manager also raised eyebrows by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the move was backed up by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the No 10 position and scoring his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel noted. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his position.”
Bellamy Hopes for Improvement from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” the manager stated. “I wanted to assess our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today fills me with motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after colliding with a post and may miss out when the national team face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
