'Those final few hours were brutal': British duo finish epic voyage in Australia after rowing across the vast Pacific

One more day. One more day up and down merciless swells. Another round of raw palms holding onto unyielding oars.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles on the water – an extraordinary 165-day expedition across the Pacific that included intimate meetings with marine giants, defective signaling devices and sweet treat crises – the sea had one more challenge.

A gusting 20-knot wind off Cairns repeatedly forced their tiny rowboat, their boat Velocity, off course from land that was now frustratingly within reach.

Loved ones gathered on land as an expected noon touchdown became 2pm, followed by 4pm, then dusk. At last, at eighteen forty-two, they came alongside Cairns Yacht Club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe said, finally standing on land.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We drifted outside the navigational path and thought we might have to swim to shore. To ultimately arrive, after talking about it for so long, just feels incredible."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – set out from Peruvian shores on 5 May (an earlier April effort was stopped by equipment malfunction).

Across nearly half a year on water, they averaged 50 nautical miles a day, paddling together in daylight, single rower overnight while her teammate dozed a bare handful of hours in a tight compartment.

Endurance and Obstacles

Kept alive with 400kg of mostly freeze-dried food, a saltwater conversion device and an integrated greens production unit, the women counted on a less-than-reliable solar system for a fraction of the power they've needed.

For much of their journey over the enormous Pacific, they've had no navigation equipment or location transmitters, making them essentially invisible, almost invisible to other vessels.

The women endured 30-foot swells, crossed commercial routes and weathered furious gales that, periodically, disabled all electrical systems.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Yet they continued paddling, one stroke after another, across blazing hot days, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They established a fresh milestone as the initial female duo to row across the South Pacific Ocean, without breaks or external assistance.

Furthermore they gathered in excess of £86k (179,000 Australian dollars) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Existence Onboard

The women attempted to keep in contact with the world away from their compact craft.

Around day one-forty, they declared a "cocoa crisis" – reduced to their final two portions with over 1,000 miles remaining – but granted themselves the pleasure of unwrapping a portion to mark the English squad's victory in the World Cup.

Individual Perspectives

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, lacked ocean experience before her solo Atlantic crossing during 2022 establishing a record.

She now has a second ocean conquered. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when failure seemed possible. Beginning on the sixth day, a path over the planet's biggest sea appeared insurmountable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the freshwater system lines broke, however following multiple fixes, we achieved an alternative solution and simply continued struggling with little power during the final expedition phase. Whenever issues arose, we merely made eye contact and went, 'typically it occurred!' Still we persevered."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. Our mutual dedication stood out, we addressed challenges collectively, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she stated.

Rowe hails from Hampshire. Prior to her Pacific success, she paddled the Atlantic, walked the southwestern English coastline, ascended Mount Kenya and cycled across Spain. Additional challenges probably remain.

"We shared such wonderful experiences, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions as a team again. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
